John Kenneth Brown

Biography

John Brown was a cross country and distance track letterman at Elgin High School (Athlete of the Year 1956) and the University of Illinois during the years 1954—63 with numerous local, state and national honors. In 1960, Ken had a standout year: first place, two mile run, Big Ten Conference meet (a record 9:04); first, distance medley, Drake Relays (set record); first, 1—1/2 mile indoor, University of Illinois (6:41), breaking record held by Olympian Phil Coleman; third and top U.S. runner, 5,000—meter run, NCAA Div I at Berkeley, California; elected to NCAA All—American Track & Field Team for 5,000 meters. In 1956 Ken was first in the indoor collegiate mile at Milwaukee (4:12); 1959, first in Central AAU two mile run (9:05); 1962, first place in National AAU Tournament in the 15,000 meters. His best times in the mile and two mile runs were 4:01 and 8:45 respectively. He ran with the Hadleigh Olympiads in Essex, England for a year. He also coached at Hebron and Elgin High Schools and Elgin Community College.
