Mike Coyle

Larkin High School Class of 1967


Mike, a 1967 graduate of Larkin High, is inducted for his achievements in track. Coyle lettered in track for three years at Larkin. As a sophomore, he set a school record in the 440-yard dash. That same year, he took 1st place in the 440 at the Kane County Track Meet and anchored the 1st place mile relay team. Mike qualified for the state meet in the 220-yard dash, the 440 (school record time) and the mile relay. As a junior, Coyle set numerous field house records in the 220 and the 440, a Kane County Track Meet record in the 440, and established school records in the 220, the 440, and mile relay team. In his senior year, Mike set field house records in the 50 and 440 yard dashes and had the 4th fastest state qualifying time in history in the 440 with a 48.4 seconds. He finished 4th in the state track meet in the 440. During his career, Coyle had the best times ever compiled in Elgin history in the 100-yard dash, the 220, the 440, and as anchor of the mile relay team. He was a member of the State Track Honor Roll (the equivalent of All-State) and was the first Larkin High athlete to be named to the All-State Track Team (1967). Mike accumulated 457 points in his career, with three individual varsity records. He anchored more than 30 winning mile relay teams during a period in which the Larkin High track team never lost a dual or triangular meet. He received a scholarship to attend the University of Indiana, where he participated in track for two years before injuries curtailed his career.
