Nominated for auto racing. An outstanding racecar driver of the early 1900s, Depalma came to Elgin to race in the famous Elgin National Road Race. He was three-time champion (1912,1914 and 1920), on each occasion setting a new speed record. He returned to Elgin again at age 50 to compete in the 1933 revival of the races. Winner of the American Automobile Association's national championships in 1912 and 1914, he won the 1915 Indianapolis “500". In 27 years as a professional driver he won 2,557 of 2,889 races entered.
