Rick Hopkins

Elgin High School Class of 1971


Rick Hopkins – played center for the varsity basketball team during most of the 1969 - 1971 seasons under Coach Bill Chesbrough. During that time, Hopkins set the all-time scoring record at Elgin High with 1292 points (since broken), as well as numerous other scoring records. He scored 30 or more points seven times and 20 or more points 37 times, including a span of 25 consecutive games. Rick averaged 22.1 points per game as a junior and 25.4 per game his senior season. He was named All-Conference Honorable Mention as a junior and All-Conference 1st team his senior season. At Gavilan Community College (CA), Hopkins was named Most Valuable Player of the Coast Conference while scoring 22 points per game and averaging 11 rebounds. He then played one year at the University of Portland, scoring 10.1 points per game and 4.5 rebounds.
