Irwin A. "Irv" Johnston

Biography

A football and wrestling letterman at Elgin High School, Irv was co—captain and Most Valuable Player of the Maroons' undefeated (9—0) 1958 eleven; he was named to All—Conference, All—Chicago Area and All—State teams and received All—American Honorable Mention as a guard and inside linebacker. He was twice conference and regional wrestling champion. In addition, Irv was Athlete of the Year at EHS (1958—1959), and in 1959, he was sectional champion and All—State. His prep wrestling career record was 64—4. Irv lettered two years in football at Southern Illinois, earning Little All—American Honorable Mention recognition in 1962. He also lettered four years in wrestling at SIU where he was Illinois College and Central AAU champion 1961 and 1962. In 1963 he repeated as Central AAU champ, placed third in the NCAA Division II tourney, and won his college conference title at 191 pounds. He served as head wrestling coach and linebacker coach at Elgin High School from 1964—78. During that time, he had several wrestlers place in state competition (one became a NCAA national champion) and developed seven All—Conference and two All—State linebackers.
