Biography

Gary is inducted into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding accomplishments in football and basketball. A 1957 Elgin High School graduate, Gary was a two year varsity starter in football and basketball. In his senior year he was selected as the Elgin High School Athlete of the Year.

In his senior year of football, Gary had a 9.7 yard rushing average on 69 carries and was named Big 8 All-Conference by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Daily News Conference Coaches Poll. In addition, he received All-State honors from the Chicago Tribune and the Champaign News-Gazette and was given All-American recognition by the Wigwam Wise Men of America. Gary was named to Coach Emery Ebert's All-Time Elgin High School Football Team.

A forward on the 1957 basketball team, Gary averaged 13.5 points per game as the team compiled a record of 27-1. He was named All-Conference by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago American and the Conference Coaches Poll. In addition, he received All-State honors from the Champaign News-Gazette. Gary was named to the State All-Tournament Team becoming the only Elgin athlete so named. He was a first-team selection on Coach Bill Chesbrough's All-Time Elgin High School Basketball Team.

Gary went on to play two years of football and one year of basketball at the University of Michigan and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers before an accident curtailed his career.
