Richard "Pete" Kovacs

Elgin High School Class of 1951


A member of the Elgin High School cage team that in 1950 finished third in the "Sweet Sixteen" state finals, Pete was also on the Maroon nine that placed third in the state that same year. At Monmouth College he led the basketball team in scoring all four years; his total points came to 1,502, an average of 20.5 per game. His four—year college career free throw percent- age was 80.5. In his senior year, he sank 175 of 199 free throw attempts (87%), the best record in the nation. Pete was 1st team All—Midwest Conference three years. As a member of the Ft. Bragg service team that won the 3rd Army title in 1957, he was its leading scorer with a 27—point—per—game average. He Officiated prep/college basketball for 30 years, high school football for 26 years, and prep/college softball for 15 years.
