Elgin High School Class of 1961

Mark (Elgin High 1961) has been inducted for his accomplishments as a swimmer and coach.  During his two year Maroon varsity swimming career, he set the school record for the 100 yard butterfly in 1961, a record that still stands.  In addition, Mark was the conference champion in the event and finished sixth in the state meet.  He was named EHS Most Valuable Swimmer both years.  Michelson went on to swim at North Central College where he set school records in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly events and was the Most Valuable Swimmer for the 1965-1966 season.  He won College Conference of Illinois honors by finishing first in the 200 butterfly in 1963 and first in the 100 and 200 butterfly in 1964 and 1966.  He took national honors in 1963 when North Central won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Championship by winning both events, as well as being a member of the first place 400 medley relay team.  The following year, Mark took second place in the 200 yard butterfly, third place in the 100 yard butterfly, and first place as a member of the 400 medley relay team at the NAIA Championships where North Central finished third in the nation.  For his outstanding performances, Mark was named All-American in 1963, 1964 and 1966.  He was inducted into the North Central College Hall of Fame for Men’s Swimming in 2006.

In 2009, Michelson was elected to the Eastern Massachusetts Interscholastic Swim Coach Hall of Fame.  As founder and head coach of the Sunrise Swim Club in Springfield, MA, and head swimming coach at Longmeadow High School, he coached a national champion in the butterfly and 57 state champions.  In addition, Mark routinely had teams that won the New England AAU Senior Team Championship and led the high school team to three state championships.
