Larry Michelson

Elgin High School Class of 1958


This Elgin High School and North Central College graduate was among the top swimmers in the early 1950's and throughout his college career. He won six individual state championships in age group YMCA competition. At Elgin High, in three years of dual-meets, he went undefeated in varsity competition, setting 21 pool records across the state. He won 5 individual Big 8 Conference titles. He won the state 100-yard breaststroke title in 1957 and the state 100-yard butterfly title in 1958, setting IHSA state records in both events. Larry was Elgin High School's first 2 time All-American athlete in any sport. After setting several records at the University of Illinois, he transferred to North Central where he went on to win two National Association of Intercollegiate athletics (NAIA) individual championships in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly and was a member of the NAIA championship 400-yard medley relay in 1962. He set or helped set NAIA records in all three events.
