Brian Oldfield

Inducted 1980

Elgin High School

While a student at Elgin High School in 1963, Oldfield won the Illinois State Championship in the shot put with a throw of 57 feet, 7—1/4 inches in the rain. Brian later developed a new technique, twirling one and one—half times within the ring before releasing the shot. He is the only Elgin athlete to ever participate in the Olympics (Munich, September 1972), earning sixth place with a 68 feet, 7—1/2 inch effort. In 1975 he put the shot 72 feet, 6—1/2 inches at an indoor meet, and 75 feet even out—of—doors, both for world marks, but they were not recognized as world records because Brian made them as a professional athlete with the International Track Association. His best recognized throw of 71 feet, 7 inches in 1980 ranks fourth on the all—time list.
