John Paul

Inducted 1980

St. Edward High School Class of 1953

John Paul made such an outstanding name for himself as a cager at St. Edward High School that his jersey number was retired after he ended his prep school career there. Paul had 1,501 career points for the Green Wave and averaged more than 24 points a game during his senior year at St. Ed's 1952—53. He was one of five picked for the Champaign News—Gazette All—State team in 1953, which was somewhat of an achievement for a player in a school with only 150 students, and at the time of his induction to the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame John was the only St. Edward High School athlete to attain all—state honors. He was also selected to the All—Northeast Catholic Conference basketball team three consecutive years from 1950—53. Paul went on to the University of Illinois where he played basketball and captained the Illini five in 1958. Following graduation from U of I, he coached basketball at Dundee Community High School and later became athletic director at Schaumburg High School District 211.
