Biography

Blaine graduated from Larkin (1965), where he earned All-Upstate Eight Conference and All-Area honors from the Daily Courier News and Chicago Tribune as a senior. While at Illinois State University , Royer was a three-time letterman in basketball and set several scoring records in his senior year, when he was named a Division II All-American after averaging 20.1 points per game, which ranked 3rd on ISU's all-time rankings in 1969 (presently ranks 11th). In addition, Royer's 583 points during the 1968-69 season also ranked 3rd on ISU's all-time list (presently ranks 10th). Blaine was a member of three NCAA tournament teams, two of which were Elite 8 teams. He was named team most valuable player his senior year (69), was the Illinois Inter-Collegiate Conference MVP, and the MVP of the NCAA Regional Tournament at Valparaiso. Upon graduation from ISU in 1969, Blaine was drafted by the NBA's San Diego Rockets, only the second ISU player to be drafted by the NBA. He has been inducted into the Illinois State University Hall of Fame both as an individual and member of a conference winning team.
