Walter Rust

Elgin High School Class of 1944


Nominated for speed skating, Rust represented the Illinois Skating Association in three National Championships and two North American Championships. He won several city skating titles in the early 1940s and was the top youth speed skater from Elgin of his time. He set national records as a juvenile (half mile) and a junior (3/4 mile) enroute to several state, national and North American race titles. He was the first Elginite to win a North American crown as a 13 year old in the Juvenile Division in 1940. As a 15 year old junior, he placed second overall, but won one of the three races in the North American Championships. He was the winner of two Chicago Tribune Silver Skates titles. He graduated from Elgin High in 1944. He later moved to Washington where he has continued to excel in cycling in the Masters (over 50) Division of Velodrome Track Racing.
