Willard Schuldt

Elgin High School Class of 1951


Schuldt was in the Class of 1951 at Elgin High, earning All-State recognition in both football and basketball. Willard led the basketball team in scoring in both 49-50 and 50-51. The 1949-1950 team finished 3rd in the state (ranked 7th in the state) and was John Krafft's final year as coach. The team had a 23-5 record for the season, and Willard scored 374 points, including 69 in four state tournament games, which set a record for Elgin High (he still stands as the 3rd all-time leading scorer in Elgin High state basketball, ranking behind Mark Baugh and Gary Smith (54-55). In Bill Chesbrough's first season as coach (1950-1951), the team had a 19-8 record. Willard again led the team in scoring, with 412 points. After graduation, Willard served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He was killed in combat during the battle of Pork Chop Hill and received several medals posthumously.
