Roger Smithberg

Biography

Roger starred as a pitcher in baseball at Larkin High School and Bradley University. He pitched in the majors with the Oakland A's in 1993 and 1994. In 1993, Roger appeared in 13 games, pitching 19.2 innings in relief while compiling a 1-2 record with 3 saves and a 2.75 ERA. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the second round of the 1987 amateur draft and quickly advanced to Class AAA Las Vegas. In 1992, he joined the A's and pitched at Class AA Huntsville and at Class AAA Tacoma before being promoted to the A's major league team. In his debut on September 1, 1993, Smithberg faced Paul Molitor, Joe Carter, and John Olerud, the meat of the Toronto Blue Jays lineup, and retired them in order in his first big-league inning. He was 11-10 in three seasons at Bradley, where he attended on scholarship, including 5-3 with a 3.8 ERA his junior season (1987). Roger was inducted into the Bradley University Hall of Fame in 2001.
