Paul Sokody

Elgin High School Class of 1934


This man has a career in sports covering more than 58 years, and it all started when he became letter winners in basketball and football at Elgin High School, from whence he graduated in 1934. Paul went on to Marquette University where he played basketball. He captained the Warriors cage team and was its leading scorer for the 1937—38 season. He then joined the eight—team professional National Basketball League, a forerunner of the National Basketball Association, playing with the Sheboygan Redskins and the Chicago Studebakers from 1938—42. He led the Redskins in scoring during the 1938—39 season. Sokody is probably best known as a basketball referee. During the seasons 1946—73 he officiated in more than 2,000 high school and college games, including Illinois State High School tournaments and Big Ten and Missouri Valley Conference contests. Paul has served more than 13 years as a score-keeper for Elgin High School cage games. He is a charter member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and a life member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
