Biography

An Elgin native, Betty is inducted into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame as a championship speedskater. She graduated from St. Edward High school in 1953. She is the only woman from Elgin to compete in more than two national speedskating championships.
She competed in the Junior Division in 1949 and 1950, the Intermediate Division in 1951 and in the championship race of the Senior Womens Division in 1953. Betty twice won Illinois speedskating titles, winning in the Intermediate (1951) and Senior 1953) divisions. She won two Tri-State Championships and six Elgin City Titles, including three Senior Division Championships (1952-54). She won Chicago Tribune Silver Skates titles three straight years in three different divisions (1950-52) and is the only person from Elgin to ever accomplish that feat.
