Herman J. "Hermie" Walser

Biography

Born in Grenchen, Switzerland, on April 25, 1911, Hermie Walser was a 1930 graduate of Elgin High School. In his junior year, Walser was the leading scorer on the 1928-1929 Elgin High basketball team. He was quarterback and captain of the 1929 Elgin High School football team, the first in the school's history to go through a season undefeated. "Hermie" was accorded All—Conference and All-State football honors in 1929. At the University of Illinois he earned three letters in football while playing quarterback, fullback, and center. He captained the 1933 Illini football team. "Hermie" coached football and basketball at Rhinelander (Wisconsin) High School for the 1934—35 season, and then he became football, basketball and golf coach at Joliet (Illinois) Township High School. At JTHS he coached basketball for four seasons, and in 1937 Walser produced a team that won the state championship at Champaign. "Hermie" was named athletic director at Joliet in 1941, a position he served in until 1964. During his career at JTHS, he also coached football through the 1950 season and golf until 1952. In addition, he developed a football program for Joliet Junior College in 1951, coaching there until 1957. In 1964, he became athletic director at Joliet West High School, retiring in 1973.
