Walter "Wally" Wetzel

Biography

A longtime friend and official for youth, high school and college athletes, Wally graduated from Elgin High School in 1948 where he participated in football and wrestling. He was among the key contributors to the Classic Little League, installing the lights and the concession stand. He was a coach in the league from 1963 to 1973, winning 7 major championships and being named All-Star manager 7 times. Wally coached the Elgin American Legion Post #57 team (1974-1976), winning two district titles. He helped donate and construct the St. Edward's pressbox and was the Green Wave's basketball and football announcer.

Wally officiated basketball and football at the high school, college and AAU level, establishing an outstanding record in each sport. His 28 year basketball officiating career involved approximately 2700 games. He worked 7 district and 19 regional high school tournaments. He officiated 17 years at the prestigious Proviso West Christmas Tournament and 15 years at the Marengo Christmas Tournament. He served as president of the Elgin Area Officials Association for three years and the West Suburban Officials Association for four years. Football officiating found "Wally" completing a 16 year career which included approximately 288 high school varsity games. He officiated in 4 state quarterfinal games.

Wally also played fast pitch softball for 23 years, competing in four World Tournaments from 1962 to 1965.
