Biography

Rick is inducted for baseball. A two time All-Conference standout pitcher and 1st baseman for Larkin.  During his varsity career, Rick threw two no-hitters, striking out 141 and allowing 28 hits in 88 innings.  His senior season, his earned run average was 0.63.  Drafted by the California Angels in the 1969 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, Rick began his seven year career at Idaho Falls in the Rookie League.  After a 5 – 3 record and 3.45 ERA, he spent the next two seasons at Quad Cities where he was 13 – 12 with 235 strikeouts in 214 innings and 2.73 and 3.07 earned run averages.  In 1972 Young pitched at AA Shreveport and AAA Salt Lake City with a combined 10 – 10 record.  The following year at Salt Lake City, Rick started 29 games and completed 9, pitched 185 innings, and won 12 games with a 3.11 ERA playing on a team with many future major leaguers.  He was also selected to the AAA All-Star team with future major leaguers Manny Trillo, Mickey Rivers, and Bernie Williams.  Pitching in Winter League, Young suffered an elbow injury which eventually curtailed his career after two subsequent seasons in the minors having won 46 games.
