Don Brown

Biography

Don began his outstanding wrestling career at Elgin High School where he posted a 28—1 record as a senior and finished third in the state at 112 pounds.  At EHS he also lettered in tennis, cross country and track and earned the athlete of the year award his senior year.  He went to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa where he became a conference champion at 123 pounds in 1963 and 1964.  He was team captain in 1964 and 1965. He took second place in the 115 lbs. weight class in the NCAA Division II Tournament, and he was a quarter-finalist in the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1963.  In February of 1964, as a junior, he was selected by the Amateur Wrestling News as second team All—American, NCAA Division I at 115 pounds when he placed third in the Division II Tournament and was again a quarter-finalist in Division I.  An injury during his senior year kept him from competing in any postseason competition.   Don was the last Cornell College athlete to receive recognition at the Division I level.  He was named to the school’s Hall of Fame in 1986.
