William A. "Bill" Hoffer

Biography

Prior to his induction into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame, Bill Hoffer, one of Elgin's greatest all—time golfers, won the Illinois Open in 1983 at Elgin Country Club. He was also the United States Golf Association's Mid—Amateur champion in 1982 and a member of the victorious U.S. Walker Cup team at Hoylake, England. Bill was an All—Big Ten golfer at Purdue University in 1971 and was named as a first team Coaches' All—American in his senior year. In 1969, he was the Illinois State Amateur champion and in 1968 won the Elgin City championship. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur in 1970, 1976, 1980, and 1983, and he holds the course record (64) at Elgin Country Club, set in 1980. Hoffer is a 1967 graduate of Larkin High School.
